On April 18, 2024, the NHL’s Board of Governors approved a plan that renders the Arizona Coyotes franchise inactive, and approved the establishment of a franchise beginning with the 2024-25 season in Utah. The Coyotes transferred the totality of their existing hockey assets – including their full Reserve List, roster of Players, draft picks and its Hockey Operations Department – to the Utah Franchise.

During the 2022-23 season, the Devils and Coyotes faced off in two games, both resulting in victories for the Devils. Their first game against the Coyotes on November 12 was at home, with the Devils coming out on top in a 4-2 win. Their second matchup was in Arizona on March 5, where the Devils won in overtime with a 5-4 final score.
In the 2023-24 season, the Devils and Coyotes faced off on two occasions, with Arizona taking both wins. Their first matchup of the season on October 13 resulted in a shoot out win for the Coyotes. Their game on March 16 resulted in a 4-1 victory for Arizona.
