In 1997, the New Jersey Devils and Montreal Canadiens met in the first round for their first and only playoff series. In Game 1, Hall of Fame legend Martin Brodeur became the fourth goaltender in NHL history to score a goal, marking only the second time that a goalie had scored a goal in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Devils would go on to win the series 4-1.
The 2024-25 NHL season included three matchups between the Devils and Canadiens resulting in a series sweep for New Jersey. The Devils faced the Habs on November 7 and January 25, winning both games, with the latter going into overtime. Hischier and team traveled to Montreal on February 8 to face the Canadiens, shutting out the home team 4-0.
The Devils defeated the Canadiens 2-1 during their 2025-26 season. They first faced off on November 6 at the Prudential Center, resulting in a 4-3 overtime win for the Devs. The two squads met up for back-to-back games on April 4 and 5 splitting the games with one win each.
